Smart+ or manual TikTok campaign: how to choose

TikTok offers automated campaign types, commonly called Smart+, alongside the classic manual setup. Automation reduces the number of settings you manage and leans on your creatives and conversion data. Manual setup keeps explicit control over audience and structure. Neither is better in general; the choice depends on your data, your budget and how much you need to explain results.

What it does

In an automated setup you supply the goal, the budget, the creative assets and the basic limits such as location, and the system decides much of the targeting and how to combine assets. This can work well when the pixel records a steady stream of conversions and when you have several different creatives to rotate. It is less predictable when data is thin.

Manual campaigns let you set the audience, placements and structure yourself. That helps when you must stay within strict constraints (a service area, a language, a licence requirement), when you want to read exactly which audience produced which result, or when you are running tests whose meaning would be blurred by automation.

Test them in a fair way. Use the same goal, the same budget level and the same creatives for both, and run them for the same period. Compare cost per qualified result, not just the platform's cost per result. If you change creatives or budgets in the middle of a test, restart the comparison.

A common path for a small business: begin manual with a narrow, well-defined audience to learn what works, then try an automated campaign with proven creatives and compare. Keep a manual campaign for hard constraints that automation should not stretch.

Why it helps

  • Less setup work and fewer decisions when automation fits your data volume.
  • Explicit control and clean learning from manual setups when constraints matter.
  • A tested decision instead of an assumption about which method is better.

How to set it up

  1. List your hard constraints: location, language, licences, product limits.
  2. Check conversion volume: if the pixel records only a few results a week, start manual.
  3. Prepare at least three different creatives before trying automation.
  4. Create one manual and one automated campaign with the same goal, budget and creatives.
  5. Run them for the same period without edits and compare cost per qualified result.
  6. Keep the better setup, and record why, for the next account.

Good to know

  • Names, options and defaults for automated campaigns change; read what your Ads Manager offers today.
  • Automation can drift outside your intended audience. Review where delivery went before scaling.
  • AdAce Ads reads both kinds of campaign and can propose a pause or a budget change with your approval; it does not choose the campaign type.
