Snapchat targeting basics: location, age, language, interests and audiences

Targeting in Snapchat is set per ad squad, not per campaign. The options are broad enough to build an audience that is too small to deliver or too wide to mean anything. This guide describes what exists and suggests a first setup for a local or regional business.

What you can target and how

Geography can be set by country, region or state, metro area or postal code, and also by a point and radius, each as include or exclude. If you target several countries, Snapchat requires a language to be specified. Pick the smallest area where you can actually serve the customer, such as the metro areas where you hire or deliver.

Demographics include gender, language and age. Snapchat allows a minimum age from 13 to 35 and a maximum from 13 to 55; if you leave out the maximum there is no cap. For ads with an age-sensitive product or a regulated category, follow the platform rules and the law first. Narrow ages are not automatically better: they shrink the audience and can raise cost.

Interests come from Snap's Lifestyle Categories and from other segment sets, such as shopper or visitation segments. Treat them as hypotheses about who might respond, not as proof of intent. Custom audiences, built from your customer lists, your pixel visitors or people who engaged with your Snapchat content, can be included or excluded and are usually more valuable than another interest layer.

Start with a geography, a reasonable age range, the relevant language and one interest or audience idea per ad squad. Then look at the estimated audience size before launch. If you do not know how big an audience is, you cannot tell whether poor delivery is a creative problem or a size problem.

What a deliberate first setup gives you

  • A first audience that is large enough to deliver and narrow enough to mean something.
  • Each ad squad tests one targeting idea, so results can be compared.
  • Exclusions keep existing customers or applicants from absorbing budget.

Build a first audience in five steps

  1. Define the area you can serve and add it as the location of the ad squad.
  2. Set the language of your ad and an age range that matches the actual customer, not a guess.
  3. Add one interest or one custom audience per ad squad you want to test.
  4. Check the estimated audience size before launch and widen the setup if it is very small.
  5. Exclude people who already converted when you have a list or a pixel audience for them.

Good to know

  • Some targeting options are being phased out or are not available for regulated ads (housing, credit, employment). Snap's documentation advises disabling audience auto-expansion for these categories.
  • AdAce Ads reads an ad squad's targeting (countries, regions, age, gender, languages, interests, audiences), searches the account's real targeting values and can propose a change; parts set in a more complex way stay as they are and are changed in Snapchat Ads Manager. Early access.
