LinkedIn Insight Tag and conversion rules: measure leads first
Without a conversion rule LinkedIn only sees clicks and optimizes toward people who click. The Insight Tag is the piece of code that lets LinkedIn see what happened on your site; the conversion rule says which of those events counts as a result. Set both up and check them before you pay for traffic.
What it does
The Insight Tag is a JavaScript tag placed on every page of the site, directly or through a tag manager. It identifies visits that came from LinkedIn ads, builds website audiences and reports conversions. A conversion rule then defines the event: a thank-you page URL, a click on a button, or an event your site sends when a form is submitted. Event-based rules are more reliable than URL rules when the thank-you page is shared or can be reloaded.
Choose a result that really means a lead. A page view of the contact page is a weak signal; a submitted form with a valid contact is a strong one. If you also track a second, weaker event, such as a pricing page visit, keep it as a secondary conversion so campaign optimization is not trained on it by accident.
Enhanced tracking passes a LinkedIn click identifier (li_fat_id) with the visit, which is what later lets you send offline outcomes such as interviews or sales back to LinkedIn. It needs the tag and your consent flow to work together: in regions that require consent, the tag must wait for the visitor’s choice.
Verify before you spend. Open the site, submit a test form, and check that LinkedIn shows the rule as active and the event arrived. Then check again after a few days of real traffic: a rule that never fires will quietly make a conversion campaign useless, and a rule that fires twice per lead will make results look better than they are.
Why it helps
- LinkedIn can optimize for conversions, not only for clicks.
- Reports show cost per lead, not only cost per click.
- A verified tag is the base for retargeting audiences and server-side conversions later.
How to set it up
- Install the Insight Tag on all pages, through your tag manager or directly, respecting your consent banner.
- Create a conversion rule for the one event that means a real lead and choose click and view windows deliberately.
- Submit a test lead and confirm the rule status and the event in LinkedIn.
- Attach the rule to the campaigns that should optimize for it.
- After a few days of traffic, compare the number of rule conversions to leads in your own records.
Good to know
- AdAce Ads can check tag health: the domains the Insight Tag fired from, whether enhanced tracking is on, and the last event of each rule. It can also create a lead rule from the leads setup; a conversion-objective campaign created in AdAce Ads requires that rule.
- Do not send personal data such as names, emails or phone numbers in conversion events.
- A new rule needs time and events to report; do not judge it in the first hours.
