The first two seconds of a TikTok ad: how to earn the next ten

On TikTok an ad appears in a feed where the next video is one swipe away. The opening moment decides whether the viewer stays long enough to hear your offer. That does not mean shouting or clickbait; it means making the first scene immediately relevant to the one person you want, and showing why in the first seconds.

What it does

Open with the viewer's situation or the outcome, not with your company. A logo animation or a slow establishing shot spends the only seconds you have on something nobody asked for. A line such as the problem the viewer has, a surprising visual of the result, or a direct question works because it creates a reason to keep watching.

Match the opening to the audience you are targeting. A hiring ad for truck drivers can start in a cab at six in the morning, with the real pay or home-time promise on screen; a shop can start with the finished product in use. If the first scene could belong to any advertiser, it is too generic to stop anyone.

Use motion, a person looking at the camera, readable on-screen text and an early spoken or written promise together. Many people watch with sound off or low, so the opening must work as text and picture. Keep the first line short enough to read at a glance.

Test the hook as a separate variable. Make several versions of the same ad that differ only in the first scene, and compare how many viewers continue watching and then click. Keep the body, offer and call to action unchanged so you know what caused the difference.

Why it helps

  • The right viewers stay longer, which gives the delivery system better signals about who your ad is for.
  • Separating the hook from the rest of the ad makes it clear what to change when results fall.
  • A relevant opening filters out the wrong audience early, which saves budget.

How to set it up

  1. Write one sentence: who is watching and what do they want in the next ten seconds.
  2. Draft three different openings: a problem, a result and a question.
  3. Shoot each opening on a phone in vertical format and put the key words on screen as text.
  4. Attach each opening to the same body, offer and button.
  5. Launch the versions in one ad group and let them gather comparable delivery.
  6. Compare how long people keep watching and the cost per result, keep the strongest opening and write three new ones against it.

Good to know

  • A strong hook cannot rescue an unclear offer or a weak landing page; check the full path.
  • Do not make claims the product cannot keep. Misleading openings raise rejections and hurt trust.
