Reddit keyword targeting: reaching conversations, not search queries
On Reddit, keywords do not mean what they mean in search. Nobody typed them to ask you for something; they describe the conversation around the person who sees your ad. Treating them like Google search terms leads to lists that are too broad, too literal or aimed at the wrong moment.
What a keyword means on Reddit
Keyword targeting lets you show ads to people engaging with content on Reddit that relates to the words you choose. The signal is topical, not transactional. A person reading a thread about slow trucking paperwork is a prospect for a paperwork tool, but is not asking to buy one. Your ad should therefore start the conversation the reader is already in, not assume they are ready to purchase.
Build the list from real phrasing. Read posts and comments in relevant communities and note how people describe the problem, the product category and the alternatives they compare. Use those words, including informal ones, rather than brand copy. Before relying on a term, validate it: Reddit provides a way to check whether specific keywords can be used for targeting, and some terms are not available.
Keep lists themed and small at first. One ad group for a problem phrase cluster, another for product category terms, a third for competitor or alternative terms, if you decide to use them and policy permits, allows you to read which theme works. A single long list mixing intents gives you a total and no explanation. Avoid single generic words that match many unrelated conversations.
Use the keyword breakdown in reports to prune. Compare cost per meaningful result by keyword once there is enough volume, remove those that spend without outcome and add related phrasing from the winners. Combine keywords with communities only deliberately, since each added condition narrows reach and makes small budgets slower to learn.
Why it helps
- Topical reach beyond community lists: you can follow a subject wherever it is discussed.
- A language-driven method: phrases from real posts keep ads close to how people talk.
- A report with edges: by-keyword results tell you which phrasing deserves more budget.
Build, validate and prune the list
- Collect twenty to thirty phrases from real posts about the problem, the category and the alternatives.
- Group them into three or four themes and discard generic or ambiguous single words.
- Check the terms with Reddit’s keyword validation or the targeting interface and drop those not accepted.
- Create one ad group per theme, with ads that match that stage of thinking.
- After enough impressions, open the keyword breakdown and compare cost per result.
- Remove weak phrases, add related phrasing from the best ones and record each change.
Cautions
- A keyword is not a promise of intent. Expect more browsing and less buying than on search.
- Check Reddit’s advertising policy before targeting sensitive subjects or competitor names.
- AdAce Ads shows the keywords set on a Reddit ad group, includes them in the report breakdown by keyword and can set keywords when it creates a paused campaign. Editing the list later happens through a proposal of the ad group’s targeting.
