Reddit interest targeting: when broad topics beat named communities

Interests are Reddit’s broad topic categories. They reach people across many communities that share a theme, which is useful when you do not know which communities will respond, and risky when a budget needs precision. Used with a plan, they are a good way to discover where to go next.

What an interest is

An interest is a category, such as a hobby or a field, that Reddit assigns from how people use the platform. Choosing one reaches a wide pool without naming each community. This helps when your offer is general, when relevant communities are many and small, or when you are new and need a map of where interest lies before you choose communities one by one.

The cost of breadth is relevance. An interest audience contains people at all levels of intent, including many who will never need your product. Interest targeting therefore usually needs a message that qualifies the reader quickly, with a clear statement of who the offer is for, where it applies and what it is, so that clicks come mostly from those who fit.

Use interests as a discovery layer. Run a small test with interests in one ad group and your best communities in another, same message, similar budget, and compare cost per meaningful result. If the interest group performs, read its community breakdown to see where the results came from, and promote those communities into their own ad group.

Keep the audience narrow enough to be useful: a handful of interests that clearly relate to the offer, together with location and language limits where they matter, is better than ticking every vaguely related box. Remember that adding conditions narrows reach, while expanding targeting options can widen it, so check which settings are on.

When breadth helps

  • Discovery: find communities you would not have thought of.
  • Simplicity: a starting point for businesses with a general offer.
  • A graduation path: from broad interests to specific communities as evidence arrives.

Test interests against communities

  1. Open the interest list in Reddit’s targeting and choose three to six categories that directly relate to the offer.
  2. Create an interest ad group and a community ad group with the same message and comparable budgets.
  3. Add location and language limits to match where you operate.
  4. Run both for a full week and compare cost per meaningful result.
  5. Open the community breakdown of the interest group and note which communities produced results.
  6. Move the best of them into a dedicated ad group and trim interests that bring volume without outcome.

Watch the width

  • A broad interest can spend quickly with little value. Watch the first days and be ready to pause.
  • Interest labels are Reddit’s own classifications and can change. Re-check them if results shift.
  • AdAce Ads can search the interests Reddit offers, show those set on an ad group and include the interest breakdown in the report.
