Upload ad videos to YouTube from your Google Ads account
For advertisers who have a video file but no habit of running a YouTube channel: how Google Ads relies on YouTube for video ads, why unlisted is the usual choice, and how to get from a file to a video ID ready for Demand Gen or Performance Max.
What it does
Google video ads do not take a file directly: the ad points to a video hosted on YouTube. Demand Gen video ads, Performance Max asset groups and video campaigns all reference a YouTube video by its ID, the 11-character code in the video link. So the first practical step of any video campaign is getting the file onto YouTube under an account you control, and doing it in a way that does not clutter a public channel with ad cuts, test versions and language variants that viewers were never meant to browse.
Unlisted is the usual choice for ad videos. An unlisted video does not appear in the channel's video list or in search results, yet it can serve in ads and anyone with the link can open it. Private videos are different: as a rule they cannot run as ads, so check visibility before you build an ad around a video. Public makes sense only when the video should also live on your channel as content. Whatever you choose, the video is reviewed together with the ad, so it must follow Google's advertising policies; check the current requirements in Google's help.
Prepare the file with placements in mind. Demand Gen and Performance Max can show video in many places, from in-stream on YouTube to Shorts and feeds, so it helps to have horizontal, vertical and square versions of the same message. Show the brand and the offer in the first seconds, add burned-in captions because many people watch without sound, and keep a clear call to action at the end. Name every upload clearly, with offer, language, orientation and version, for example drivers-ru-vertical-v2, so you can find the right ID later and never upload the same cut twice.
Typical problems are predictable. A file in an unusual codec fails or takes long to process; a video uploaded to an employee's personal channel disappears when that person leaves; a new version is uploaded under the old name and nobody knows which ID is live. Keep uploads under an account that belongs to the business, keep a short list of video IDs with their language and orientation, and make sure processing has finished before you put an ID into an ad. If a Performance Max asset group has no video at all, Google may generate one from your images and texts, so supplying your own keeps you in control.
AdAce Ads can upload a video file to YouTube through the client's connected Google Ads account, using Google's YouTube video upload API. Supported formats are MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI and MPEG, up to 256 MB. The video is unlisted by default. The file streams to Google and is not stored by the service. If a video with the same title has already been uploaded, it is not uploaded again, which protects against duplicates. Once processed, the video ID can be used in Demand Gen or Performance Max ads, and the creative library then shows how the video performs across ads.
Why it helps
- From file to video ID without opening YouTube Studio.
- Unlisted by default, so ad cuts stay off your public channel.
- No duplicate uploads for the same title.
- The file goes straight to Google and is not kept by the service.
How to set it up
- Prepare the file in MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI or MPEG, up to 256 MB.
- Give it a clear title with offer, language and orientation.
- Open the client in AdAce Ads and start the YouTube upload through its connected Google Ads account.
- Wait for YouTube to process the video and copy its video ID.
- Use the ID in a Demand Gen video ad or a Performance Max asset group.
- Follow the video's results in “Campaigns” → “Creatives”.
Good to know
- Files over 256 MB need to be compressed or uploaded through YouTube directly.
- Anyone with the link can open an unlisted video, so keep private information out of ad videos.
- Google's video ad requirements change; check the current help before production.
