UTM parameters for Google and Facebook ads: client templates and audit

Inconsistent UTM tags make analytics unreliable. A client UTM template defines the standard once and shows exactly where ads deviate from it.

What it does

Templates exist separately for Google and Meta, with sensible defaults such as utm_source=google, utm_medium=cpc, utm_campaign, utm_id with the campaign ID, utm_content and utm_term. Macros like {campaign_id} or {ad_id} are translated to ValueTrack parameters for Google and dynamic URL parameters for Meta.

The UTM audit compares each ad's actual tracking parameters with the template: ok, partial, mismatch or missing. Warnings remind you about Google auto-tagging and account-level tracking templates.

Why it helps

  • Reliable GA4 matching by utm_id.
  • See at a glance which ads have broken tags.
  • New Meta creatives get the template automatically.

How to set it up

  1. Open Tracking for the client and the UTM section.
  2. Review or edit the Google and Meta templates.
  3. Run the UTM audit for an account and review statuses.
  4. Fix Google campaigns with a final URL suffix proposal; for Meta, new creatives use the template.

Good to know

  • Existing Meta creatives cannot change URL parameters through the API; edit them in Ads Manager if needed.
  • Only owners and admins can edit templates; changes are logged.
