Organic vs paid search with Search Console

Paying for clicks you would get for free is a common leak. The organic vs paid view puts Search Console and Google Ads side by side, query by query.

What it does

For each query the view shows organic clicks, impressions and average position next to paid clicks, spend and conversions. Queries where the site already ranks at the top and ads still spend a lot are highlighted, as well as organic queries with demand that are missing from ads.

Data comes from the connected Search Console property and the stored search terms of the client's Google Ads accounts.

Why it helps

  • Save budget on queries that already convert organically.
  • Find new paid keywords from organic demand.
  • Align SEO and paid search teams around one report.

How to set it up

  1. Connect Search Console for the client.
  2. Make sure Google Ads search terms are being collected.
  3. Open Tracking and the Search Console report.
  4. Review overlaps and propose negative keywords or new keywords.

Good to know

  • Brand queries often rank organically but still need ads to defend against competitors — decide case by case.
  • Search Console data arrives with a delay of a couple of days.
